Sehnsucht

"Our commonest expedient is to call it beauty and behave as if that had settled the matter. Wordsworth’s expedient was to identify it with certain moments in his own past. But all this is a cheat. If Wordsworth had gone back to those moments in the past, he would not have found the thing itself, but only the reminder of it; what he remembered would turn out to be itself a remembering. The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited."

C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

  1. Lovely quote Aly. It reminds me of when I studied that idea for Lewis.

  4. Beautiful. I was reading it with a quizzical look until I realized it wasn't your writing, it was C.S., himself. I thought some zombie had taken over your body. :D

  5. Beautiful... *sighs deeply* That's me: listening for and trying to find the smelling a flower I have not found, the echo of a tune I have not heard and always hungry for news from a country I've never yet visited. I'm trying to get in, but you know what Customs are like... ;) Passports and luggage all have to be set in order. *grins*

Say, did I ever respond to your comment on my blog? *frowns thoughtfully* I've a feeling I haven't. I beg your pardon... and am delighted to see you got a blog! On Blogger, I mean. Weren't you XGama somthing? *is confused*

*chuckles* I left a comment over at Delaney's blog on her post "By the Sea" and your comment. *sighs wistfully* Ah, if they'd only open the portal/or the Wood between Worlds (I'm not picky) so I could traipse off to Cair Paravel for summer hols...not that I really have one. *grumbles* Blasted math and science...pff.

Anyhoos, love the blog! Say, you write...any chance I could have a look at some of your stuff? *looks hopeful* I feel it's wondeful and I want to read it! :)
